Some of the top outdoor experiences happen to be in freezing weather. For those who aren’t used to the cold, or are looking to perfect their game, we have a quick guide here for packing for cold weather. Always Layer, start with the lightest layers near your skin. This allows for some circulation and prevents overheating.

Head

You lose solid portion of heat through your head. People said 50% of your heat is lost there until a scientist proved it to be closer to 10% which is still a lot so we’re going to cover that up for sure.

Wool beanies are great, they pack easy and come in a ton of varieties so you can pick your style and be set.

Plan to bring a facemask if you expect a lot of wind, its a bummer to have your face and nose whipped by the cold and go raw. Buffs work well but are not that warm. Scarfs can work too or they have insulated options made more for the cold.

Upper Body

Flannel shirts are a good bet for the top since they have heavier options and are easily layered.

I’m a fan of thermals, they layer and insulate well and are ranked by temperature

****Thermal Rating Comparison Table

Hands

If you plan on getting wet/ snowy its recommended to go with waterproof gloves.

They make thin liners that fit well under gloves and provide another layer of insulation to keep your hands comfortable

Sometimes I’ll bring hand warmers and leave them in my pocket or inside of my glove.

Thinsulate is a material commonly used to insulate clothes and make them warmer. Checking the tag to compare how many grams are used is a good way to compare which gloves are warmer.

Lower Body

Jeans khakis and work pants are fine for the outer pants layer. They provide some durability and wont rip or get threaded too quick.

Wool socks and insulated boots will keep your feet warm. Tuck your thermals into your boots if possible.

Feet

Wool socks are great because

Layer them up and get some foot warmers

Boots are the way to go. Look for the thinsulate grammage but also pay attention to the material \. Rubber does not insulate very well
